Promoting mental health education and awareness in school in Ghana

About the Project

This project is funded by BasicNeeds USA under a longstanding and continuing relationship between BasicNeeds USA and BasicNeeds-Ghana. The project is a one-year initiative which seeks to address the generally high level of unmet need of mental health information and services for adolescents and young adults, especially school-based youth.

The purpose of the project is to increase mental health information and services to basic and secondary level pupils/ students through youth-centred and youth-led behaviour change communication activities to be undertaken through school-based Mental Health Clubs. The project will be implemented in 9 schools working with teachers (patrons of the clubs, School Health Education Programme [SHEP] Coordinator, and Special Education teachers) organise and implement youth-centred pupil/student-led activities and information.

This includes periodic health screening sessions to increase access to youth-friendly assessments and psychosocial support the pupils/students with mental health care needs. The project targets to reach an estimated 450 pupils/ students and 27 school teachers/ educational workers.
