BasicNeeds Ghana has donated a computer and its accessories to the Psychiatric Unit of the Mamobi General Hospital. The donation was in response to a request made by the hospital to BasicNeeds-Ghana for support in processing and storing patient hospital records. The items, which were presented at a small ceremony at the hospital on December 20th, 2017, comprised of an HP Desktop computer, a color printer and an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) unit.
Presenting the items to the hospital, Anaba Sunday Atua – Projects Officer at BasicNeeds Ghana – said BasicNeeds-Ghana was very much in support of mental health development at the community level. He added that this was one effective way of ensuring that mental health services were available and accessible to people with mental health needs. He asserted that within the last two years, BasicNeeds-Ghana had demonstrated its commitment to developing community-based mental health care in the Mamobi area by donating medicines, conducting specialist outreaches and helping to furnish the psychiatric unit. These, he stressed, had been done with the support of UK aid. He implored the unit to make good use of the computer to help improve mental health service delivery within their catchment Area.
Mr. Charles Banarfo, the Mamobi Hospital Administrator, who received the items on behalf of the hospital, thanked BasicNeeds-Ghana for the organization’s continuous support to the unit and the whole hospital. He testified that not only had the hospital benefitted from material support from BasicNeeds-Ghana, but the capacity of most of the Mamobi hospital staff had been enriched from the training organized by the organization.
The head of the psychiatric unit of the Mamobi Hospital, Kofi Danso, thanked BasicNeeds Ghana for the donation. He assured BasicNeeds-Ghana that “we shall make very good use these items to improve mental Health Services in the Hospital. We are indeed grateful to you (BasicNeeds-Ghana) and your donors and we are very motivated to put in our best.”
In a separate development, BasicNeeds-Ghana has donated computers and accessories to the psychiatric units of the Yendi Municipal Hospital and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation office in the Upper East Region. These donations form part of the organization’s commitment to promoting community-based care and sensitizing communities to promote the rights of people with mental illness and epilepsy.
