Stepping out of the classroom and into the field of development work is an experience like no other. As a BSc Development Management student at the SDD University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Faculty of Public Policy and Governance, I had the opportunity to intern at BasicNeeds-Ghana, where I gained firsthand experience in the practical side of development work. This allowed me to apply the theories and concepts learned in the lecture hall to real-world situations. The experience has been incredibly enriching, as I have contributed to efforts aimed at improving the lives of individuals with mental health challenges and epilepsy.
My time at BasicNeeds-Ghana has been both educational and fulfilling, offering me an in-depth understanding of the intersection between mental health, social development, and community-based support systems. The organization’s mission is to “develop and implement initiatives that directly involve people with mental illness or epilepsy, their families, communities, and other organizations to enhance self-determination and influence public opinion and decision-making on mental health and development.”
A Welcoming and Supportive Work Environment
From the very beginning of my internship, I was welcomed into a professional and supportive work environment. The staff at BasicNeeds-Ghana are passionate about their work and eager to share their knowledge and experiences. I was assigned a variety of tasks that provided me with hands-on experience in different aspects of the organization’s operations. These included assisting with data collection, planning project activities, and carrying out community outreach initiatives. Through these experiences, I gained valuable insights into stakeholder engagement and the need for comprehensive support programs for individuals with mental health conditions and epilepsy.
Learning About Mental Health Integration
One key aspect of my internship was learning about BasicNeeds-Ghana’s approach to mental health care, which involves integrating mental health services into the primary healthcare system. Through training and support for health professionals, the organization ensures that individuals with mental health conditions receive the care they need in a timely and effective manner. I also learned how BasicNeeds-Ghana collaborates with local communities, healthcare providers, and government agencies to develop sustainable, community-based mental health services.
Engaging in Community Awareness Campaigns
A major highlight of my internship was participating in community awareness campaigns aimed at educating the public about mental health, challenging misconceptions, and reducing stigma. These campaigns reinforced my understanding of the importance of awareness and education in fostering a more supportive and inclusive society for individuals living with mental health conditions. I also had the privilege of interacting directly with beneficiaries of BasicNeeds-Ghana’s programs, hearing their stories, and witnessing firsthand the transformative impact of the organization’s work on their lives.
Hands-On Experience in Advocacy and Sensitization Programs
During my internship, I attended various workshops, meetings, and strategy sessions, which deepened my understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the mental health sector in Ghana. I had the privilege of participating in a Rights-Based Advocacy Workshop for people with mental health conditions in Tamale, Gushegu, and Karaga. Additionally, I took part in sensitization programs at the Tamale Dakpema Palace, educating Self-Help Groups and the general public on voting procedures. These experiences exposed me to the barriers that hinder access to mental health services, including limited resources, social stigma, and a shortage of trained professionals. I also learned how BasicNeeds-Ghana is addressing these challenges through advocacy, education, and community engagement.
A Transformative Experience
Overall, my internship at BasicNeeds-Ghana has been a transformative experience. It has deepened my understanding of the challenges surrounding mental health in Ghana and strengthened my passion for social development and mental health advocacy. The skills and knowledge I have gained during this period have provided me with a solid foundation to contribute meaningfully to the improvement of mental health services and support systems for vulnerable populations in the future.
I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to work with such a dedicated and passionate team at BasicNeeds-Ghana. As I move forward in my academic and professional journey, I look forward to applying the lessons I have learned and continuing to advocate for mental health awareness and social development.
