BasicNeeds Ghana , a mental health and development advocacy non-governmental organisation is 20 years today. The Organisation was set-up and registered with the Registrar General Department on 12th April 2002 with the vision of ensuring that people with mental illness or epilepsy live in dignity and satisfy their basic needs and exercise their basic rights.
BasicNeeds has contributed greatly to improving the lives of over 100,000 people with mental illness and their families in the communities in Ghana since its inception through awareness creation on mental health aimed at stigma reduction and improved knowledge of mental illness, capacity building for various stakeholders on mental health issues, access to treatment services, sustained and secured livelihood for people with mental illness, influencing policy for inclusiveness and prioritization as well as empowering people with mental illness through the self-help- groups for self-advocacy at district and national levels .
The journey so far has been:
20 years of sustained mental health advocacy
20 years of mental health awareness raising
20 years of facilitating community mental health services in Ghana
20 years of providing sustainable sources of livelihood for people with mental illness
20 years of promoting anti -stigma campaigns in mental health.
